Privacy policy

This page explains what Just Yap collects and why — both if you're just on the waitlist, and once you're using the app itself. If you only came here from the waitlist form, the "Waitlist-only data" section below is the part that applies to you; everything else describes what happens once you create an account.

Account & journal data

When you create a Just Yap account, we store:

• Your email address and, if you signed up with an email and password, a securely hashed version of that password (we never store your password itself, and we can't see it). If you sign in with Google or Facebook instead, we don't receive or store a password at all — just your email and name from that provider.
• Your name, if you give us one.
• The journal entries you write or say, and Just Yap's replies to them.
• The tasks, mood logs, feeling logs, and insight cards Just Yap builds from those entries.
• A small set of long-term "profile facts" — things Just Yap has picked up about you over time so it doesn't ask you to repeat yourself.
• Location points you've attached to reminders, if you use location-based nudges (see "Location data" below).

How your journal entries are processed

Every entry you write or say is sent to Anthropic's Claude API. That's what sorts it into a task, idea, feeling, or something interesting, writes Just Yap's reply, and builds your daily insight cards. This is the core of how the app works — there's no way to use Just Yap without your entries being processed this way.

Anthropic processes this content to return a response to Just Yap; it isn't used to train Anthropic's models. We also run a semantic search step so Just Yap can recall things you've mentioned before — that step runs on our own server, not a third-party service, so your entries aren't sent anywhere extra just to make that work.

Location data

If you turn on location-based reminders, Just Yap can nudge you when you're near a place you mentioned (like "remind me to get oranges" firing when you're near a shop). This requires location access, including in the background so the reminder can fire even when the app is closed. The location points you attach to reminders are stored on our server so your reminders keep working across devices. This feature is entirely optional and can be turned off in Settings at any time, which stops any further location collection.

Product analytics

We use PostHog (hosted in the EU) to understand how the app is used — which screens get opened, which features get used, and app-level events like logging a mood. This is tied to your account so we can track down bugs and see what's working. It does not include the text of your journal entries or chat messages.

Waitlist-only data

If you've only signed up for the waitlist and haven't created an account, we store just: the email address you typed in, a short label for which page the signup came from, and when you signed up. We don't ask for your name, and we don't store your IP address, location, or device details alongside a waitlist signup. This is used only to email you when Just Yap is ready — we're not running a newsletter and won't send unrelated marketing.

Who else sees it

We do not sell your data or share it with third parties for their own purposes. The services involved in actually running Just Yap are:

• Anthropic processes your journal entries to power the AI features described above.
• Google or Meta (Facebook), only if you choose to sign in that way — they confirm your identity and share your email and name with us so we can create or sign you into your Just Yap account. We don't receive anything else from your Google or Facebook account.
• PostHog receives the product-analytics events described above.
• Vercel hosts this website and provides aggregate, non-identifying visitor analytics for it.
• Google Fonts serves the typeface on this page; your browser fetches it directly from Google, which sees your IP address as part of that request, as happens on much of the web.

How long we keep it

For as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, everything tied to it — journal entries, tasks, insights, mood and feeling logs, profile facts, and location points — is permanently deleted immediately, not just hidden. Waitlist-only entries are kept until Just Yap launches and we've emailed you, or until you ask us to delete it, whichever comes first.

Security

Passwords are hashed, never stored in plain text. All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Access to production systems is limited to the person running Just Yap.

Age

Just Yap is intended for people 16 and older. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger than that, and account creation requires confirming you meet this age requirement.

Your rights & getting your data removed

If you have an account, you can permanently delete it and everything in it at any time from Settings → Delete account — no need to email us. If you can't sign in — lost phone, forgotten password, or you've lost access to the Google or Facebook account you signed in with — you can request deletion here without reinstalling the app. You can also request a copy of what we hold about you, or ask us to correct it, by emailing pretorius.ops@gmail.com. If you're only on the waitlist, email the same address to have your entry removed.

Cookies

This site does not set advertising or tracking cookies, and there is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it, and material changes will be called out in the app.
